The young wolf stopped, panting for breath. It had been a long and treacherous journey to the great ash, and her lungs were burning from the effort of travel across the desert. But she had reached her destination with trouble, the vast gorge that ran through the Great Ash. Within its depths was said to grow a msytical plant that eased all maladies, and this is what she sought.
She stopped to rest, her senses on high alert, ears perked for danger.

Esk moved through the volatile land, orange on shades of iron and the occasional spiral of white-hot inflammation, a flame among flames. The foxlike girl skirted rifts and geysers without hesitation as she trotted through the volcanic gorge, her surefootedness perhaps implying that she knew these grounds more than she actually had from the few weeks' time since she'd made this volcanic site her home.
Really, the safety that came with her lack of caution was founded more in luck than anything else.
Rounding a small hillock of basalt and ash, the slender wolf slowed, tongue lolling from well-formed jaws as she drank in breaths that tasted like metal and sulfur. And...other. Hackles prickled and that angular head raised with sharp alarm, some sort of childish aggression towards whoever was invading her "home".
"HEY!" The yearling yelled sharply into the empty spaces of the path along the gorge. "WHO'S THERE?"
It was a demand more than a question, rude and fearless and fairly unwise.

Bastion jolted awake from his sleep and winced as his creaky bones snapped back into place in his spine. "I'm getting far too old for this job..." he grumbled and he hoisted himself up from the cave's rocky floor. He yawned widely, his jowls wobbling from the motion. He sucked in dry air and a little volcanic ash, and he gagged slightly. Something had woken him up from a pleasant dream of retirement, and wallowing in Hallowbone lake with- NO.He shook his head. He had to stop thinking of retirement. This land needed him, and he wasn't sure if anyone else could take his place quite as well. He smirked to himself at this point. Well, I AM getting big headed, aren't I? Old man, what have you become. He approached the cave entrance and looked down. The cave was situated quite high up a rocky cliff, and from this ledge outside of it, he had a fantastic vantage point of the whole stretch of land right up to just before the rocks of the desert started. Bastion squinted as he could see two figures approaching each other about halfway between his cave and the desert. Or were they tumbleweeds? He shook his head again. My vision is getting worse, maybe I should ask that dope, Ven to heal my eyes....He sighed and made the decision to go and check it out. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happened in The Great Ash, so why would today be any different? (Bastion is the ruler of The Great Ash by the way I need to make some new characters, but RP'ing is helping us shape their personalities a little for now ).

Yelping, Grace started to look for a place to hide... the fire wolves were notoriously violent and she was no fighter. She hid behind an outcrop of rock, her heart pounding. I was so close! she thought to herself. Maybe they won't find me and I can get back to searching for that bark...
She flattened herself against the rock, painfully aware of how her desert colouration did her no favours in this harsh land. If the fire-wolf found her, she had to be ready to run.

The young she-wolf didn't see Bastion, as he roosted at a distance -- perhaps she caught a hint of a scent, faint as a memory, and flicked a quizzical ear at it. She wouldn't know who he was, being a neophyte to these parts as she was, but she would perhaps sense something "else" 'out there'. A wrinkle of the scarred nose would close the lid on whatever Esk thought of that, and she would whirl suddenly to lope towards the source of some faint noise.
Yelps -- splitting the silence harshly, hawkish sounds much different from the occasional rumble of the volcano or wind screeching through the gorge. Those lips, cream and orange, lifted over hot, slick teeth and purpled gums in a wrinkle of lips and saliva. Threat, two-thirds bark and one-third bite, brazen but not hollow. Kiakime's ruff bristled on end and tail scythed high as she ducked around the outcropping --
and misjudged the closeness of the scent and sound of the other. Instead of landing in front of Grace, if the other character didn't dodge away, the orange girl would ram right into her. Perhaps she'd bounce back in an equal but opposite reaction, or perhaps they'd end up entangled in a confused mess of fur and limbs and snarling hostility (one-sided hostility, anyway).
"OOF--!"
If Grace dodged out of the way in time, Kiakime would turn on her instead, stiff-legged and hot-tempered, ears flattened to her skull.
In the first-case scenario, the ripping growl would come whenever she disentangled herself from the other she-wolf; in the second, it would be prodded forth immediately.
"Who're you and what're you doing here?!"

Bastion halted in his tracks, his pawpads skidding on the hot hard rock and he heard the telltale yelps of a fight. He snarled slightly under his breath. He had to constantly make an effort to keep his lands fighting-free, and that was hard enough with the two quarrelling groups who lived here without a couple of rogues bumming around. He bounded down the last few "steps" (the rocks leading from his cave had evolved over time to become a handy sort of staircase) and pounded as fast as his old frame could carry him. He froze for a nanosecond when he recognised one of them as Grace from the neighbouring Sunsorrow Desert. He often didn't mind her coming into his lands, but who was this other? He saw the other prepare for an attack, and without thinking, he launched a small fireball towards her to disorientate her and break up the fight. Attack@Kiakime (in your next post, post the health you have remaining from this attack... I hope it's not too much hehehe ) [#@rand#=29.48669589869678%@]

Dodging clumsily the unexpected tackle, Grace stumbled near the edge of the gorge, only just keeping her grip. She scrabbled to regain her footing, the rough rock cutting into pawpads as she stumbled back onto her feet. Bastions arrival and attack saved her, but she could not leave without what she came for.
Her attacker was outraged, and far larger and stronger than she was. I have to get away.. she thought, panicking. Bastion would be able to help, but his age stood as a problem... she decided to run, dashing into the gorge, despite her exhaustion.
She could only hope that the bark was close-by, or else things would not be well for her...

((Sorry guys, classes and rl things are killing me not so softly. Gonna say Kia dodged the attack and ran like hell out to somewhere else in the volcano, so I don't hold this thread up any longer!))
